DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 24th  \n3:10 PM\, Zoom Link Below \nDr. Brian Greaney\, Assistant Professor\, Economics Department\, University of Washington \n  \nAbstract \nThe paper which is joint work with Joe Shapiro and Katherine Wagner. \nWe study the optimality of human groundwater extraction from many of the world’s 3\,400 aquifers. Some prominent aquifers have declining levels because use exceeds recharge. We use remote sensing and administrative data to estimate a dynamic model of water extraction for each aquifer\, recover the discount factor that rationalizes observed groundwater extraction\, and compare it against normative and market benchmarks. We find that 65% to 81% of global aquifers are extracted too rapidly. Inefficient groundwater extraction creates over $3 trillion in global present-value welfare costs—a large magnitude but only a few percent of the total present value we estimate for all aquifers globally. DESCRIPTION:The Pacific Northwest Water Summit\, led by the Idaho Department of Water Resources and Boise State University\, is a new iteration of the annual Idaho Fall Water Supply Meeting. This meeting is held each year to recap the water supply from the previous water year and provide climate and water supply outlook information for the coming water year. Partners from Oregon and Washington will share additional relevant content on impacts felt across the Pacific Northwest during the water year. The end of the meeting will culminate in a networking opportunity for all in-person participants. Catering will be provided for this event. \nCutting-edge innovative water resources research will be shared through presentations and a student poster session. The recap of the water supply from the 2025 Water Year will provide insight on how conditions impacted the build up and melt out of the year’s snowpack\, timing of irrigation demand\, and how much storage water remained by the end of the 2025 Water Year. The outlook information for the coming year will review oceanic conditions and how anomalies in the Pacific could impact the coming year’s snowpack/water supply. This meeting will also incorporate the Annual 2025 Water Year Impacts Survey for the Pacific Northwest.
