SUMMARY:Walking Rivers
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail on on May 11th at 10:00 am.  \n  \nLet’s celebrate the rivers of the Palouse! The Rivers\, Watersheds\, and Communities Club at WSU\, in collaboration with the Water Research Center\, is hosting our first Walking Rivers event. A day #WalkingRivers is a global event to recognize and celebrate local rivers and is organized by the Centro Ibérico de Restauración Fluvial\, Spain. Join us in our walk along Paradise Creek to learn more about Palouse rivers\, water quality\, and restoration. \nAll ages are welcome\, and the Palouse Trail is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. While the goal is to walk 10\,000 steps (about 4 miles)\, we understand that this may be too far for some. All are welcome to participate for any amount of time and any length of the trail. \nWear blue to identify with the global Walking Rivers community! \nParking: Limited parking is available in the Mint Condition/Quality Inn lot next to the trailhead\, and Quality Inn has agreed to allow overflow parking if the designated trailhead parking spaces are full. More parking is available on Latah Street. \nRegister here \nFor questions about the event\, please contact Hailey at hailey.v.smith@wsu.edu \nFollow @wsu.rwc on Instagram for event updates. \nFor more information about the global event\, visit https://cirefluvial.com/walkingrivers/en/

SUMMARY:Integrating Agricultural Water Use into Climate Change Impact Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rajagopalan and her research team worked to advance the climate change impacts assessment model\, CropSyst\, by integrating agricultural water use associated with managing extreme weather events (e.g.\, watering to control sunburn in apples) into modeling.  The work helps provide a more accurate picture of water demand during extreme temperatures and increases understanding of how projected changes in these demands might impact instream flows. Dr. Rajagopalan will explain the team’s efforts and how the new assessment capabilities can help regional water resources planning considerations. \nLearn more and register here

SUMMARY:WDFW Riparian Analysis Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join a virtual workshop about a riparian analysis data platform currently being developed by WDFW. \nThe riparian data platform will unify input data streams to allow for aggregation and comparison across resources and spatial extents\, providing the capability to answer questions about where riparian vegetation exists and where it is needed to achieve desired ecological functions and outcomes. Your input can help us develop a follow-up application that can be used to help plan and prioritize work to restore riparian areas. \nThe first workshop will be held on Friday\, December 15 from 9:00-11:00 AM on Zoom. We will present information on the project approach and the riparian assessment data\, identify potential use cases\, and facilitate a discussion to gather your input. The presentation on the project background will be recorded and available for those who are interested but unable to join the workshop. We will also be looking for participants who can commit to participate in three future workshops over the next 6 months to provide ongoing input and engagement as we develop the tool. \nRegister here: https://esassoc.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ofumorjgrHNH9Stl8SPzifk8Sqri2phPw?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#/registration \n

SUMMARY:CV ReWorkshop: Updating Your CV to Contextualize Your Contributions in Societally Engaged Work
DESCRIPTION:Are you a researcher engaging with non-academic partners to develop science that meets real-world needs? If so\, you may have noticed that the traditional format of scientific CVs\, focused on comprehensive lists of publications and presentations\, makes it challenging to convey the distinct skills\, activities and products associated with your societally engaged research. So how do you develop a CV that accounts for these real-world contributions\, yet still aligns with the traditional CV format expected in academia? \nJoin an interactive workshop on December 12 to find out! This work session is designed to support you in incorporating narrative elements into your CV that help contextualize your skills and experiences and better communicate your work. We’ll draw from lessons learned in our previous webinar\, Reworking Scientific CVs to Better Capture Societally Engaged Research and Move Towards Fairer Research Assessment. \nAfter setting the stage for why you might consider adding narrative elements into your CV\, we’ll break into small groups and walk through prompts for how to incorporate narrative elements that highlight meaningful\, contextual information about your contributions in societally engaged research. We’ll have a mix of quiet work time as well as time for discussion and questions. \nRegister: 12

SUMMARY:Water Science Conference (WaterSciCon) Abstract Submission Opens
DESCRIPTION:Abstract Submission Opens \nThe Water Science Conference (WaterSciCon) brings the water community together every two years to share research\, collaborate\, and plan for the future. WaterSciCon 2024 will be held the week of 23 June 2024 in St. Paul\, Minnesota. \nWaterSciCon advances hydrology and related global convergent science issues and helps address and expose local and regional issues worldwide. The meeting will bring together a community of water-focused researchers\, educators\, practitioners\, engineers\, and policymakers spanning academic\, agency\, public\, and private sectors to share tools and approaches\, build new collaborations\, and synthesize our understanding of people\, planet\, and water science. \nThe theme of the meeting is Catalyzing Collaboration. Leveraging collaborations between co-sponsors\, AGU and CUAHSI\, WaterSciCon includes engineering\, urban planning\, social science\, and affiliated science communities.

SUMMARY:Assessing Wetland Functions and Values with Applications to the Voluntary Stewardship Program
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 14\, 2023 @ 1-4 pm \nFacilitator: Levi Keesecker\, Natural Resource Scientist\, WSCC\nPresenters: \n\nAmy Yahnke\, Washington Dept. of Ecology;Connor Racette\, Washington Dept. of Ecology;\nRick Mraz\, Washington Dept. of Ecology;\nRachel Maggi\, Natural Resources Conservation Service;\nJacob Taylor\, Spokane Conservation District;\nMatt Stevenson\, CORE GIS; Meghan Halabisky\, University of Washington\n\nDemonstrating the effects of agricultural conservation practices on wetland functions and values is an important component of many county and conservation district monitoring efforts\, particularly for counties participating in the Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP). This virtual session will cover a variety of approaches used to assess wetland functions and values with an emphasis on applications to watershed-scale monitoring and VSP. During this informational session we will cover the following topics: \n\nOverview of the Washington Dept. of Ecology’s field-based Wetlands Rating System\nResults from the Dept. of Ecology’s Statewide Wetland Mapping Inventory\nPro’s and con’s of using the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Technical Note 14 for field-based wetlands assessments\nOverview and introduction to emerging remote sensing tools that estimate wetland presence/absence and functioning.\n\nREGISTER HERE
