USGS/NIWR National Competitive Grants RFPs Webinar: April 23, 10am CT

Washington State water research community,

 

USGS in cooperation with the National Institutes of Water Resources (NIWR) will soon release their annual request for water research proposals under its National Competitive Grants Program.  These programs include a call for general water research proposals, under the WRRA 104g program, program specifically for research on Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and a program on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS, though this third program focuses on the Mississippi basin). Any investigator at an institution of higher learning is eligible to apply for these grants with research that focuses on priorities of regional and national importance. The RFP is anticipated to be released in mid-April with an application deadline in late May 2024  (exact dates will be announced later). If you are working through an institution in Washington State, you must submit your proposal for these programs through the State of Washington Water Research Center (WRC, wrc.wsu.edu).

Water resources research institutes across the US are organizing a joint webinar on April 23rd, 2024, at 10am Central Time that focuses on the National Competitive Grants RFPs. We will discuss the full proposal process and funding priorities and include an opportunity for researchers to ask questions. In addition, researchers will be able to identify potential collaborators in topic specific breakouts.

The WRC Director Jonathan Yoder met with Washington State federal legislators this February, and nearly all legislative offices he visited independently brought up PFAS concerns, so there is a great deal of interest in this water problem in the State of Washington.  I strongly encourage researchers interested in developing proposals for PFAS-related projects to contact me early.  This program is relatively new and has received relatively few proposals in previous years, so the chances of success are higher than for the WRRA 104g grants.

The conference seeks to bring together a diverse multi-disciplinary group of water professionals – to disseminate, share, and learn about research-based cutting-edge solutions to evaluate and address future water risks and improve how society can adapt to these risks. AWRA-WA presents:

The Four Corners of Washington – Water Resource Changes and Adaptations

The conference will highlight water challenges throughout the four corners of Washington State and the innovative ways that individuals are dealing with those issues. The conference will feature speakers from each of the four corners of Washington with varying perspectives, including agriculture, government, and tribal nations. Speakers will cover topics including municipal water law, adjudication, fish reintroduction, the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan, and climate change. The conference will start with an address from the keynote speaker, Derek Sandison, who is the director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Following Derek Sandison’s address there will be four separate panels, one dedicated to each corner of Washington. The last session will focus on more overarching, or non-region-specific changes and adaptations.

Seminar: “Evapotranspiration of irrigated crops under warming and elevated atmospheric CO2: What is the direction of change?” Dr. Fabio Scarpare

The State of Washington Water Research Center and the Egypt Center for Excellence (COE) in Water are co-sponsoring the February COE webinar series on Feb 2nd at 8am PDT.

The talk will be given by WSU’s Dr. Fabio Scarpare and is entitled “Evapotranspiration of irrigated crops under warming and elevated atmospheric CO2: What is the direction of change?”

David Christensen six years’ experience as the Program Development Manager for the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Water Resources Program. He works with the legislature and elected officials, and leads a team that develops state policies and rules on water resource management in Washington. David has more than 20 years’ professional experience in water resource, public health and environmental management. David holds a B.S. degree from the University of Washington in Fisheries Biology and an M.S. in Limnology and Oceanography from the University of Wisconsin.

Water Resources Science and Management Certificate – Spring Meeting 2019

The WRC will be hosting its Spring 2019 meeting about the WRSM undergraduate certificate. Students from all majors should attend!

At this meeting:

  • Learn about what the certificate offers, what you need to do to complete it, and have any of your questions about the process answered.
  • Meet other students who are completing this certificate and get some snacks.
  • Hear from the Engineers Without Borders club, who will share what they’ve been doing to provide clean, sustainable water to communities in Panama.

The WSU chapter is currently working with a community in rural Panama to ensure a year-round water supply with a) construction of a solar powered pump for river water and b) exploration of groundwater supply options. EWB needs people working on both the social and technical side of their projects, so all majors are encouraged to join!

The Conference Planning Committee invites you to propose a Special Session for the conference. A special session organizers’ role is to propose a relevant and timely topic, recruit speakers to submit abstracts to the session, and moderate the session during the June 2019 Conference. Special sessions can be in the form of a panel discussion or a group of 5 or more oral presentations (full length or 5 minute lightning talks) on a specific topic. Multiple session track proposals are welcome.

Steve Olson to give a seminar on his book “Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens” March 21, 5pm at WSU PACCAR 202.

Steve Olson, who grew up in the Othello, Washington, will explore the historical forces that helped determine who lived and who died in the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Title: Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens

Steve Olson is the author of Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens, which was named one of the top nonfiction books of 2016 by Amazon and won the Washington State Book Award. He also is the author of Mapping Human History: Genes, Race, and Our Common Origins, which was nominated for the National Book Award, and other books, and he has written for the Atlantic Monthly, Science, Nature, Scientific American, Wired, the Smithsonian, and many other magazines. Since 1979, he has been a consultant writer for the National Academy of Sciences, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and other national scientific organizations. A native of Washington State, he now lives in Seattle.
